The Four of Swords is the card of rest. After strain or conflict, the mind and body need a pause. It describes recovery, quiet reflection and the strength that returns with stillness.

01

The stone figure of a knight lies on a tomb, his hands joined in prayer. Three swords hang on the wall above him, pointing down, and a fourth lies along the side of the tomb. A stained-glass window glows in the wall.

The resting figure is at peace, in a deliberate pause from battle. The hanging swords are struggles set aside for now. The church and its window suggest sanctuary: a protected space in which to recover before returning to the world.

02

Upright, the Four of Swords describes rest and recovery: time out, a break from stress, quiet reflection or healing after a hard period.

A pause is not a failure to act. It may be exactly what lets the next decision be a wise one.

03

Reversed, the Four of Swords can show restlessness: returning to activity, or being pushed to act before you have fully recovered.

It may also describe exhaustion from refusing to rest. The reversed card asks what would let you truly recover, rather than simply stop.

04

In love, the Four of Swords can describe a needed break, space to think or a quieter phase in a relationship.

Usually “not yet”.

As a yes or no card, the Four of Swords usually says not yet. It suggests waiting and resting before you act.

A meaning is general. Your reading is not.
