King of Cups
Composure · Wisdom · Emotional Balance
The King of Cups is the card of emotional balance. He feels deeply, but he is not ruled by his feelings. It describes calm, wisdom and the strength to stay steady while others are swept away.
What is on the card
A king sits on a stone throne that floats on a rough sea. He holds a cup in one hand and a sceptre in the other, and wears a fish-shaped pendant. On one side a ship sails, and on the other a fish leaps from the waves.
The rough sea is strong emotion all around him, yet his throne stays steady. The cup is feeling and the sceptre is authority, held together in balance. The ship and the leaping fish suggest practical life and the life of feeling, both within his care.
King of Cups, upright
Upright, the King of Cups describes emotional maturity and calm leadership: someone, perhaps you, who stays kind and steady under pressure.
He favours diplomacy, and compassion with boundaries. Strength here means feeling fully without being overwhelmed.
King of Cups, reversed
Reversed, the King of Cups can show emotions held in too tightly, or released in unhelpful ways: moodiness, coldness or manipulation.
It may also describe someone who appears calm but is not honest about what they feel. The reversed card asks for emotional honesty, beginning with yourself.
