ThemeEnding & Renewal

In a reading, the Death card speaks of endings and transformation. It is not a prediction of anyone’s death. It describes a chapter closing so that another can begin. Like autumn, it clears away what has finished its season.

01

A skeleton in black armour rides a white horse, carrying a black banner marked with a white rose. Before it lie a fallen king, a figure in robes pleading, a young woman turning away and a child looking on. In the distance the sun rises between two towers, and a boat drifts on a river.

The skeleton is what remains when everything temporary is stripped away. Change reaches everyone, from the king to the child, and each meets it differently. The white rose is renewal and purity. The rising sun is the promise in the card: after the ending, a new day begins.

02

Upright, Death marks an ending: of a phase, a habit, a role or a way of seeing yourself. The change may be welcome or painful, but it is often necessary.

Its message is transformation. By letting go of what has run its course, you make space for something more true to who you are now.

03

Reversed, Death can show resistance to an ending that is already happening: holding on to a situation, a person or an identity long after it has changed.

The reversed card asks what you are afraid to release, and whether holding on is costing more than letting go would.

04

In love, Death can describe the end of a relationship, or the end of an old pattern within one, so that it can transform. For someone single, it can mean finally releasing the past.

What it means for you: Whether it points to an ending or a deep change within your relationship depends on your question.

At work, Death often marks the close of a chapter: leaving a role, a project ending, or a decisive change of direction. It clears the way for something new.

What it means for you: What is ending, and what may follow, depends on where you stand at work.

With money, Death can describe the end of one source of income or way of managing money, and the need to adapt to a new reality. It is not a prediction of loss.

What it means for you: What it suggests for your finances is personal. A reading offers reflection, never financial advice.

Usually “no to the old way”.

As a yes or no card, Death is usually read as a no to things continuing as they are. It suggests the answer lies in change and in a new beginning.

A meaning is general. Your reading is not.
